Book Club: Frankissstein – A Love Story by Jeanette Winterson

For our ninth edition of the Book Club we will read a sci-fi and historical fiction book about the transgender experience of love and life itself.

Frankissstein tells the story of Ry Shelley, a transgender doctor self-described as “hybrid”, meeting Victor Stein, a celebrated professor working at the bleeding edge of “accelerated evolution” through “self-designing” life in present-day Brexit-era Britain. His interest in Ry is both sexual and detachedly philosophical. In Ry’s post-surgery body, he sees transhuman implications. “You aligned your physical reality with your mental impression of yourself,” he tells Ry. “Wouldn’t it be a good thing if we could all do that?”

Ry is quick to acknowledge the distinct and in some ways lonely intersection of science and gender fluidity that their existence encompasses. “I live with doubleness,” Ry says at one point. But where Stein sees Ry as one who “chose to intervene in your own evolution”, Ry’s view is rooted more in discomfort with the present. “I am part of a small group of transgender medical professionals,” Ry says. “Some of us are transhuman enthusiasts too. This isn’t surprising; we feel or have felt that we’re in the wrong body. We can understand the feeling that any body is the wrong body.”

**About the Book Club in the ‘Gay & LesBian Social The Netherlands’ Meet up Group**

This event will never feel like a literature lesson, but a fun and cozy event. Its purpose is of connecting like-minded people through literature. We are a group of home readers, literature enthusiasts, and those willing to improve their reading habits.

A short overview of the regular event is:
– Welcome drinks with selected music chosen for the book
– Short Introduction of the Book of the Month
– Reading of selected central pieces of the book
– Open conversation about the main topics of the book, characters, structure, and personal impressions
– Selection of the book for the next session
– Get to know each other and Goodbye drinks

Next books will be selected democratically in the end of every session and are always a pro-LGBTQ, or friendly material.

Please only sign up if you truly will read and plan to come to the Book Club. If you sign up, please UPDATE your participation on time and please avoid short-term cancellations! People on the ‘waitlist’ will be automatically included.

Please buy/borrow your own copy of the selected book. Ideally everyone will have read the book before the session, but not mandatory. Support a local book shop whenever possible.

It would be great if you would like to support the discussion. Drop me a line and we will coordinate something for you to share with the other (e.g. read selected parts of the book, present some characters, go deeper on main subjects, etc.).

Event will be hosted at my place located in the Regulierdswarstraat, Amsterdam Center. I will send the exact address in a private message some days before.
