The Unorganized Thursday Drinks!

View LGBTQ meetups Save the date: Thursday, 12 Sep 2019 7:00

Desperate to start the weekend early? Want a casual way to meet new and old faces? We hear you.

Join us for after-work (or after-school, or after-whatever) merriment. This time we’ll be at (bar to be announced – read below to help us find a place) and we’ll try a different bar every month.

So easiest thing ever, with no elaborate plans, activities or schedules – Just come over, have some drinks, and a laid back chat with people.

We’ll be there at least from 7:00 to 9:30, but we’ll stay longer if the crowd stays longer! Come by early for more fun!

See you soon!

→ A couple of tips for us all
– Definitely don’t open a tab for the group, pay for all drinks and food immediately 😉
– We’re there to meet people, so be friendly, walk around, and mingle! Don’t stay only with the people you came with (unless you’re on a date, of course)!

→ So? Do you know any good places to have our meetup? It would be a great help if you could post any suggestions, what we are looking for is a place that:
– Has space indoors (because it’s cold outside!)
– Has an open space where people can mingle and walk around (instead of sitting down)
– Is reasonably close from Amsterdam city center (reachable by bike)
– Has reasonable prices and a relaxed, cozy bar vibe

Any recommendations?

Book Club (#2): The Velvet Rage

View LGBTQ meetups Save the date: Wednesday, 14 Aug 2019 7:30

For our second edition of the Book Club we will be reading and exchanging ideas about: The Velvet Rage by Alan Downs.

We will read a non-fiction book which we should have a lot to say, criticize, and learn. We all might still ask ourselves why despite coming out do I still feel sometimes insecure being gay? Why do we turn as gays to ideals of status, money, sex more than any other demographic group? Why is so difficult for me to find and accept love? A groundbreaking examination of the psychology of homosexuality, why it leads to shame over one’s identity, and how to overcome this.

“In The Velvet Rage, psychologist Alan Downs draws on his own struggle with shame and anger, contemporary research, and stories from his patients to passionately describe the stages of a gay man’s journey out of shame and offers practical and inspired strategies to stop the cycle of avoidance and self-defeating behavior. The Velvet Rage is an empowering book that has already changed the public discourse on gay culture and helped shape the identity of an entire generation of gay men.”

**About the Book Club in the ‘Gay & LesBian Social The Netherlands’ Meet up Group**

This event will never feel like a literature lesson, but a fun and cozy event. Its purpose is of connecting like-minded people through literature. We are a group of literature enthusiasts, home readers and those willing to improve their reading habits.

A short overview of the regular event is:
– Welcome drinks with selected music chosen for the book
– Short Introduction of the month Book
– Reading of selected central pieces of the book and main quotes
– Open conversation about the main topics of the book and personal impressions
– Selection of the book of the following month
– Final reading and Goodbye drinks

Next books will be selected democratically in the end of every session and are always a pro-LGBTQ or friendly material.

Due to the limiting amount of people for this event, please make sure to update your participation and please avoid short-term cancellations! People on the ‘waitlist’ will be automatically included.

Please buy/borrow your own copy of the selected book. Ideally everyone will have read the book before the session, but not mandatory. Support a local book shop whenever possible.

Event will be hosted at my place located in the Regulierdswarstraat, Amsterdam Center. I will send the exact address in a private message some days before.

Movie night Jumanji

View LGBTQ meetups Save the date: Monday, 15 Jul 2019 7:00

One of the best classics remade!

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a 2017 American fantasy adventure comedy film directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Scott Rosenberg, and Jeff Pinkner, based on a story by McKenna. It is a direct sequel to Jumanji (1995) and the third installment of the Jumanji franchise, which was based on the 1981 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. It pays tribute to Robin Williams, the star of the first film, by mentioning his character’s name.[7] In addition, a replica of the board game piece used by Williams’s character also appears as a clue for the Jumanji game’s new players. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale. Set twenty-one years after Jumanji, it follows four teenagers who are transported into the video game world of Jumanji and play as their chosen characters. Joining another player, they must beat the game to return home.

I will provide soft drinks and chips, if you want something more or different or stronger you are welcome to bring your own 😉
Smokers of all kind are also welcome but will have to stick to the balcony 🙂

Let’s Play Footy (Football)!

View LGBTQ meetups Save the date: Sunday, 07 Jul 2019 1:00

Come have a fun Sunday afternoon playing Footy! Footy is just like regular football/soccer except the field is much smaller (and a few other small differences). It’s great exercise and a lot of fun!

I am on a women’s footy team of mostly LGBT women and we want to get a big group of girls together to have some fun and play footy. So come join us – all skill levels are welcome!

The location has a bar next to the field so after playing we can have a few drinks and snacks together – while watching the Final of the Women’s World Cup!

– It will cost 2 euro per person to rent the field – and then you just have to pay for any drinks or food that you want
– You don’t need special shoes (cleats) or any special gear to play, just
clothes you can run in.
– The field is called Footy Park – 10-15 min walk from Sloterdijk station

Drinks! On Thursday!

View LGBTQ meetups Save the date: Thursday, 29 Aug 2019 8:00

Hi All,

Join us for Drinks on Thursday in 2019!

Once a month, we will meet at Cafe Hermes on Thursday evening. In addition to their bar, the owner Bea also offers pool, fabulous decor, an outdoor area (more important in good weather), Dutch language lessons, sjoel lessons, bar cat Max and a hearty welcome. We want to offer you a chance to meet every month in a space that is welcoming, open and prepared for the group. Hence the movement to LGBT friendly cafes.

Since it is a Thursday night, we’ll start at 8PM instead of 9. It’s around the corner from the Albert Cuyp market and all of the great restaurants in the area. Trams 3 and 12 stop on the block. It’s also right near the new North South Metro line stop De Pijp.

Looking forward to seeing you!
