Watch Together Online – Religion

Join me online to watch two short films with a LGBTQ+ theme. The relationship between religion and the LGBTQ+ community can vary greatly across time and place. Is having faith in a higher power and accepting queer people mutually exclusive or not? We can explore and discuss this with two different comedic narratives.

We’ll be using the video syncing website Watch2Gether for our viewing. I will share the link for the room just before we start.

Watch2Gether is a free sharing website that lets us quickly jump into synchronised viewing. No account or browser plugin required.

We can watch the video together in-sync while making comments in the chat window or by turning on audio/video chatting.

Best friends Brittany and Reed come out to their religious parents at their joint 16th birthday party, landing them on a bible camp retreat for misguided teens. Assuming that there must be others like them, they decide to pursue love interests in an attempt to have their first queer experiences. On the last night of camp, however, their advances quickly go awry. ‘Still Gay’ (2016) is a Wesleyan University Film Studies Thesis from director Allie Miller.

‘Homophobia’ (2018) comes from director, writer, producer and editor Stephen M. Rosado. It is an irreverent horror-comedy about a student who comes out as gay to his uber-religious circle of friends. After they reject him, their worst fears come true – homosexuality isn’t just evil. It’s killer.
