For our third edition of the Book Club we chose to read and exchange ideas about the funny and charming: Less by Andrew Sean Greer, Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
Arthur Less is a failed novelist about to turn fifty. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: your boyfriend of the past nine years is engaged to someone else. You can’t say yes–it would be too awkward–and you can’t say no–it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world.
What would possibly go wrong? Arthur Less will almost fall in love in Paris, almost fall to his death in Berlin, barely escape to a Moroccan ski chalet from a Saharan sandstorm, accidentally book himself as the (only) writer-in-residence at a Christian Retreat Center in Southern India, and encounter, on a desert island in the Arabian Sea, the last person on Earth he wants to face. Somewhere in there: he will turn fifty. Through it all, there is his first love. And there is his last.
**About the Book Club in the ‘Gay & LesBian Social The Netherlands’ Meet up Group**
This event will never feel like a literature lesson, but a fun and cozy event. Its purpose is of connecting like-minded people through literature. We are a group of literature enthusiasts, home readers and those willing to improve their reading habits.
A short overview of the regular event is:
– Welcome drinks with selected music chosen for the book
– Short Introduction of the month Book
– Reading of selected central pieces of the book and main quotes
– Open conversation about the main topics of the book and personal impressions
– Selection of the book of the following month
– Final reading and Goodbye drinks
Next books will be selected democratically in the end of every session and are always a pro-LGBTQ or friendly material.
Due to the limiting amount of people for this event, please make sure to UPDATE your participation on time and please avoid short-term cancellations! People on the ‘waitlist’ will be automatically included.
Please buy/borrow your own copy of the selected book. Ideally everyone will have read the book before the session, but not mandatory. Support a local book shop whenever possible.
Event will be hosted at my place located in the Regulierdswarstraat, Amsterdam Center. I will send the exact address in a private message some days before.
